Wahab resigns as PPP Information Secretary following remarks on Davis' immunity

Lahore, Sun, 20 Feb 2011 ANI

Lahore, Feb 20(ANI): Pakistan People's Party (PPP) politician Fauzia Wahab has resigned from the post of party's Central Information Secretary following her statement on double-murder accused US diplomat Raymond Davis.

Wahab had said last Monday that Davis had a diplomatic visa, and that he could neither be arrested nor kept in custody under the Vienna Convention.

"He (Davis) is a technical member of the US embassy's diplomatic staff and according to Pakistani laws, any diplomat and technical or administrative staff cannot be arrested or taken into custody," she was quoted, as telling reporters at the Karachi Press Club.

Talking to reporters at Bilawal House in Karachi on Saturday, Wahab insisted that she had made these statements in her personal capacity and not on behalf of the party, the Daily Times reports.

After resigning, Wahab said that she would continue to work as a party member, and that the PPP was like a family to her.

"I do not want to appear before the Lahore High Court as an office-bearer of the party. To uphold the dignity and respect of my party I have resigned from my post," she added

Former federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has been appointed s the Central Information Secretary of the party.

According to a TV report, the decision to replace Wahab with Kaira was made in PPP's recent Core Committee meeting, which was headed by President and Co-chairman of the party, Asif Ali Zardari, and attended by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, newly inducted federal ministers and other party members.
