Financial woes for turmeric farmers of Uttar Pradesh

Kushinagar, Fri, 18 Feb 2011 ANI

Kushinagar, Feb.18 (ANI): Turmeric farmers of Kushinagar, in Uttar Pradesh face huge financial losses due to soaring input cost of their produce.

The farmers complained that the input cost of the crop is more than its selling cost, which in turn gives them a little profit.

"Whatever turmeric is being bought from the farmers, or if a farmer himself is doing the business of the crop, the input cost of crop is more than the selling price of the crop. The crop is being sold at 1,000 rupees to 1,500 rupees less than the input cost. This work is being done on a large scale but there is no benefit. At this point of time, farmers are facing loss of rupees 1,000-1,500 per quintal," said Sahib Ali, a farmer.

They also complained that the Uttar Pradresh Government is not helpful.

The government earns huge amounts of money in the form of taxes but in return they do not provide farmers with any kind of facilities, says Sunil Gupta, former head of the village. (ANI)
