India's tennis sensation Sania Mirza couldn't be able to continue her good run as it came to an end after she went down fighting 5-7, 6-1, 3-6 to her Italian opponent Flavia Pennetta in the quarter finals of the $1,70,000 Moorilla Hobart International on Wednesday.
The sixth seeded Indian wasted as many as seven break points out of 12 against the Italian, as the match saw some error-prone game from both the competitors. It is only the case that the Italian made most of the opportunities that came her way as she was able to win five of her eight break points.
The Hyderabadi lass seemed to be heading for the semifinals when she levelled the match in the second set after losing just one game, but Italian Flavia Pennetta came back hard to settle the issue 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 in 92 minutes.
“It was not a very good match for people to watch, as there were lots of mistakes from both players,� Pennetta admitted later. The world number 27 Indian was inconsistent and committed several unforced errors at crucial junctures that cost her the match.
Pennetta will now face Greece 's Eleni Daniilidou who scored a 6-4, 7-5 win over Australia 's Casey Dellacqua. Second seed Vera Zvonareva also advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Russian compatriot Elena Vesnina.
Qualifier Ashley Harkleroad of US booked a place in the semis against Zvonareva, after scoring an easy 6-4, 6-4 victory over fellow qualifier Edina Gallovits of Romania.
