It was a glorious day for the Indian shooters in the Commonwealth Games here as Commonwealth and 2008 Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in his final appearance at the Commonwealth Games with a dominant display in the elimination final.
Needless to say, Bindra has earlier won the Commonwealth and 2008 Olympic champion and it was lot of expectation from him for the India.
In his event, Bindra’s score of 205.3 was too much for Abdullah Baki (BAN) who shot 202.1 to finish with silver.
Daniel Rivers from England won the bronze medal in the same event. Certainly he was the crown favorite after the 23-year-old battled through two consecutive shoot-outs to earn his spot on the podium.
But the major achievement for India was the 16-year-old Malaika Goel (IND) with a score of 198.6 from a possible 218.
Goel, who is competing at her first Commonwealth Games, did well to hold her nerve ahead of Dorothy Ludwig (CAN) who claimed Bronze after qualifying in last place.
Delhi 2010 Silver medallist, Heena Sidhu (IND) topped the qualification round, but had a disappointing final. She was knocked out in seventh place while Australia's most successful Commonwealth shooter Lalita Yauhleuskaya (AUS) finished fourth.
