Hockey India Senior Championship: Uttar Pradesh defeats Karnataka by 2-1

The host Uttar Pradesh registered third consecutive win in the 4th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2014 (Division A) as they defeated Karnataka 2-1 in a nail biting match of Pool C played at Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium in Lucknow today. Uttar Pradesh is now leading the pool table.

Both the teams gave a tough time to each during the entire first half with both teams maintaining their attack on each other. But both the teams failed to score with the limited chances that they got. The second half started with Uttar Pradesh increasing pressure over the opponents and in the 58th minute it was Diwarkar Ram who converted the penalty corner that the team got hence helping his team taking the lead. Jharkhand immediately went on the attack and came back into the game within 7 minutes and converted the penalty corner through B P Chingappa to level scores. Uttar Pradesh took the final lead in the 68th minute when B S Biddappa scored through a field goal which he pounded past the goalkeeper.

In the second match of the day in Pool C, Jharkhand’s clash against Hockey Odisha was a keenly contested match. While the first half of the match did not see any goals getting scored by both the teams, it was in the second half that Jharkhand finally tasted success in the 48th minute when Prakash Kerketa converted a pass he successfully guided past the goalkeeper. Jharkhand did not stop here and before the end of the game claimed 2 more goals which they scored in the 53rd and 58th minute. The 3 goals helped Jharkhand claim the win over Hockey Odisha.

The second half started with Services Sports Control Board sitting in a very comfortable position of a 4 goal lead. But the second session saw Andhra Pradesh trying to come back into the game and they scored 2 back to back goals in the 42nd and 46th minute. The second goal by Andhra Pradesh was a penalty stroke which they got in the 46th minute. Services Sports Control Board immediately took over again and did not allow Andhra Pradesh to strike again and they score their 5th goal in the 53rd minute and they win the match 5-2.

In the last match of the day, Haryana defeated Tamil Nadu 3-1 in Pool D. Jitender Saroha scored twice which helped Haryana to win this match. He converted two penalty corners in the 25th and 35th minutes. Till half time Haryana was leading 2-0. In the second half, Damandeep scored field goal which helped Haryana to take their lead forward. Tamil Nadu tried to reduce the margin by scoring field goal through V Vniod Rayer in the 69th minute but it was too late for them and Haryana won the match.
