Tripura Sports Hostel and Telangana girls in quarterfinals

New Delhi, October 4: The State Sports Hostel team from the newly-formed southern state, Telangana, defeated Saupin' School, Chandigarh, 3-1 in Group F to enter the Under-17 Girls quarterfinals in the 55th Subroto Cup Football Tournament at the NWC ground here today.

Similarly, Tripura Sports Hostel too made it to the quarters, beating Defence College from Colombo 3-0 in Group H. The other team that made the cut is Charity School (Nagaland) and all the three join the Assam outfit, which is already in the quarterfinals.

In the two quarterfinals to be played on Monday, Telangana will take on Assam while Tripura will clash with Nagaland. Telangana girls, making their first appearance after the state was formed recently, showed promise right from the word go. It showed in their approach to the game as they never relaxed the grip over their Chandigarh rivals.

As a result, A. Shrisha opened the team's account within six minutes and later M. Kavya added one more to the tally in the 19th minute. But the Chandigarh girls had pulled one back in the 26th minute before the teams went for a break. On return, however, it was the Telangana girls further consolidated their position with a 37th minute goal which made the teams slowing down a bit.

As for Tripura Sports Hostel, their girls had hardly to sweat against the Defence College from Sri Lanka at the Ambedkar Stadium. However hard they tried, the Colombo girls could not breach the defense of Tripura who were also good in converted even those half chances. Prity (8th minute), Babita (36) and Shivani (55) netted the goals.

Charity School, after their wonderful beginning in the tournament, continued their prowess in utilizing the opportunity as they beat Fountainhead School from Gujarat 6-0. Neichutuo was the star player for the Nagaland school as she scored four times with Mhasikhono and Akhala joining the party with a goal each.

All the time the Gujarat girls were simply watching action from their own half and in close quarters with their goal under siege form the Nagaland girls. So much so, the Gujarat school hardly made any foray beyond center line.

The YUWA India team from Jharkhand, who beat Keshiapata GM High School (West Bengal_ 2-1 in group E failed to qualify to the knockout stage. It was a good consolation win for the YUWA team after their keenly fought encounter which they had lost yesterday. Sunita and Punam scored for the winners while it was Panmani who reduced the margin in injury time.  

Local team Air Force Bal Bharti School, Delhi managed to pull out a 1-1 draw against Gayatri Vidyapeeth Shantikunj (Uttarakhand) at the Ambedkar Stadium. After being down 0-1 in the 32nd minute when Deepti struck for Shantikunj, the AFBBS through Rageshwari (42) found the equalizer.

Meanwhile, the showpiece event of the Subroto Cup, which is the Boy's U-17 tournament, gets underway from tomorrow.

3) AFBBS (Air Force Bal Bharti School, New Delhi) drew Gayatri Vidyapeeth Shantikunj,Uttarakhand 1. Ambedkar Stadium. Group G. Scorer for Uttarakhand (Deepti-32); Scorer for AFBBS (Rageshwari-42)

4) Nepal vs TAFS (The Air Force School, New Delhi). Ambedkar Stadium. Group F. Match forfeited. Nepal failed to report. TAFS gets 3 points.

5)Telangana State Sports School 3 beat Saupin’s School, Chandigarh1 vs. NWC Ground. Group F. Scorer for Telangana (A. Shrisha-6; M Kavya-19;B Roja 37) Scorer for Chandigarh (Gaganeet-26)
