Filmmaking and the art of storytelling in the digital era

New Delhi, Fri, 02 Aug 2013 Deepak Kumar Mohanty

Like many other means of communication, filmmaking and photography are the strong way to communicate our feeling and teachings. Today, in the world of Internet and the advent of social media, everyone with a camera, be it their digital camera or a cell phone, has the opportunity to spread their idea with images and sounds.

Filmmaking is the most recent art form unlike other forms of art which include painting, dancing, singing etc. Nevertheless, what is core in every art form is the art of storytelling and performance. Certainly, the act of doing anything and everything in our day to day life, which may be the act of smoking a cigarette or simply the act of walking down the road, all constitute to our experience, our identities that further transcends to our creative world.

When we talk about storytelling, it is probably the most powerful way of communication. And filmmaking is to put images and stories together to tell a story. Just like understanding the world of creativity which is infinite with limitless possibilities, the art of storytelling with new technologies, including Internet, have brought to us endless options to tell our stories to millions.

Over the last few decades, internet has revolutionised the communication world like never before. Now it seems that whole world is in your hand; just google and you have everything in front of you. The richness and reach of creative world have just got bigger and exotic with such new technologies. If you have a small camera with video recording, you have the best medium to reconcile your urge of storytelling.

As an artist we can draw, we can paint or we may even simply doodle on the back of our text book, which itself is a form of storytelling, or at least the first stage in which our urge of storytelling comes to notice. Nevertheless, with the coming age technologies there is a whole new world of creativity for new artists. In addition, any sufficient advanced technology is all magical that helps storytellers or filmmakers to create something that is naturalistically believable.

Indeed, storytelling in the digital age has been something different and an enormous art form. However, to be a filmmaker you no more need to be someone with a huge budget and an array of technological advanced knowledge. Just think of about YouTube. It’s a free video sharing website that have in recent years created many popular artists: be it singers, musicians or independent filmmakers. With your own digital camera, you just need an idea or a story to tell.

In a strange way, online media has opened the way to any kind of storytelling, but certainly the core art of telling a story remains the same. Filmmaking may have given the art of storytelling a new meaning but it is the same art form to present ideas, events and imagination with words, images and sounds.
