Why to blame JNU ?

New Delhi, Thu, 01 Aug 2013 Deepak Kumar Mohanty

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is all trending for the wrong reason when a student killed himself after attacking a female friend. The incident took place at around 11 a.m., Wednesday 31st July, when the boy walked into a class room of the Korean Language department and attacked the girl with axe and consumed poison. The girl is still in critical condition.

The news itself seems so fast-paced that certainly it is very difficult to imagine the situation and circumstances. This is not the first time any such thing is happening in the prestigious university campus but why to blame the university and its culture. Of course, no culture permits such crime or any act of violence; rather JNU always has a vibrant culture of interaction among students, teachers and intellects.

Because of some untoward incidents, it is wrong to blame the JNU campus culture. Stalking and molestation have been widespread in all across Delhi. It is up to the police to provide protection, while it is up to every one of us to learn to manage our personal and social life. The recent case is all an act of desperation and frustration that eventually cause mental disorder, prompting anyone to commit any inhuman act.

Certainly, the university administration cannot place security personnel in each and every corner or every classroom. Such incident is more to do with the socialization of our boy child when a boy is always pampered and cared by family members. There are very few instances where a girl has commit any such act of violence over a boy, it is the boy who is always taught to show his physical strength.

Such act of violence has nothing to do with JNU campus culture, administration or education system. This is more the case of our own family system and values where we always give a boy special treatment over our girl child. This further adds to our belief system of not accepting failure so easily out of greed and a tendency to achieve social and economic success at all cost.

Talking more about JNU campus, probably this is one of the very few education spaces in India which is so open in sharing thoughts, and today it stands for our modern values that give you many dreams and lot of freedom. The JNU incident has certainly shocked many of us, but the only lesson we can learn from this is to give counselling to young people in order to make them able to cope with their personal and social life.
