An unknown number of militants carrying heavy weapons attacked a central jail in Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province at midnight on Monday. Around 250 prisoners have reportedly escaped the prison.
The Central Jail, located in Dera Ismail Khan city, was housing as many as 5,000 prisoners including 250 inmates belonging to various banned outfits.
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack on jail.
The attack began with serial explosions, followed by firing and shooting of rocket-propelled grenades.
Militants also destroyed electricity transformers.
A curfew has been clamped in the area as Pakistan army has been called. Police is trying to catch the escaped prisoners.
Deputy Commissioner Mushtaq Jadoon said curfew had been imposed to avoid any damage to public.
The officer said that six suspects were arrested while two policemen with minor injuries were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
