Marriage among same-sex couples have been legalized in England and Wales after a new measures became law. The legislation which was passed by the parliament on Tuesday finally got the Royal Assent on Wednesday and became law.
Britain has now become 15th country in the world to legalize marriage among same-sex. The law would be legal from 2014. The delay is because there are still updates need to be done in Government computer systems to allow same-sex marriages to be registered.
Also there will be change in the treatment of gay couples when it came to pension schemes.
Catholic Church have from the start opposed the law. And after the news came that the law has got Queen’s approval Catholic bishops said that they are opposed to this legislation on principle.
They released a statement that read, "The new Act breaks the existing legal links between the institution of marriage and sexual complementarity".
"With this new legislation, marriage has now become an institution in which openness to children, and with it the responsibility on fathers and mothers to remain together to care for children born into their family unit, are no longer central".
"That is why we were opposed to this legislation on principle."
In Britain to make measures into law, it should receive formal approval of Queen, who is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
In February this year, lower House of Commons first voted in favour of same-sex marriage fierce opposition from members of Cameron's Conservative party.
On Monday, the Upper House of Lords approved the bill and sent it back to House of Commons for their final approval. Here on Tuesday, the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat all backed the proposals and it was finally approved by MPs and peers.
Other countries that have passes same-sex marriage law include France, Netherlands, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Argentina, Denmark, Uruguay, Belgium, and New Zealand.
