The World Boxing Council on Wednesday declared former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela as "King of Human Equality" as an acclamation to his long term struggle against racial segregation in his country.
Mandela, who was an amateur boxer during his youth was given the honour on the occasion of 50th anniversary of the Mexico-based WBC.
The sporting organization's board voted collectively to identify the former iconic South African president, WBC head Jose Sulaiman said.
WBC distinguished Mandela's imprisonment for opposing the racial segregation called as apartheid and appreciated commitment as president later "to rule with absolute respect for equal rights for all, without considering any act against those who had him in prison for 27 years".
Earlier in December 2012 WBC had declared Muhammad Ali as "King of Boxing" in the Mexican resort city of Cancun.
