West Indies all time legendary cricketer Viv Richards on Thursday came expressed his opinions about different cricketers in a press-conference in Delhi. Known to be one of the most destructive batsman of his era, Viv spoke about his favourite, master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Virendra Sehwag, Virat Kohli and other players.
Talking on Sachin, Viv said let Sachin decide when to retire. He is a legend
and can play till the age of 50.
We have to appreciate what he has done for the game. So you don't go up to him
and ask when he is retiring," said Sir Viv.
"What we see in him (Tendulkar) now is a modern day great and let us appreciate that. Even if he wants to play till 50, he should. I think it should be left to only Tendulkar to take a call on his retirement," said Viv.
On Sehwag, Viv said he would always have a destructive batsman like Sehwag in
his team.
"It is not my call (Sehwag's selection). We all know that he is a magnificent
player. He must have lost form and it happens to a lot of players. But I will
still have Sehwag in my team. Because when he gets going, he will make up for
all the losses," said Viv.
On being asked for an advice to Sehwag, Viv said: "No matter how destructive the player, there are times when things don't go your way. So why not take the singles and twos. And when you spend more time at the crease you are bound to come good."
"Look at Chris Gayle, he is playing till the last right from the first ball. And whenever he is there, fielders are guessing when this player is going to go after them."
Viv complimented Virat Kohli also saying he reminds me of himself and said "I love watching Virat Kohli bat. He looks to me like an individual of my own heart. I love his aggression and serious passion that I used to have. He reminds me of myself," Richards said.
"He is an individual who doesn’t back off from confrontation. Someone who can stand his ground under pressure. I love that as you can’t teach these instinctive aspects," Viv said.
"Just like me, he loves the ball to come to him. He wants to dive, stop the runs. He is a livewire unlike some fielders, who would just dig a hole and dive in it rather than dive to stop the ball!" he added.
Viv Richards is currently an advisor with the Delhi Daredevils for the Indian Premier League.
