A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale rattled Sichuan region of western China Saturday morning.
According to the reports of China Earthquake Networks Centre, the earthquake hit the province's Lushan county of Ya'an city at 8.02 a.m. local time, Xinhua reported.
At least 12 people have been confirmed dead and over 100 people were injured in the temblor, a provincial seismological bureau confirmed.
The epicenter with a depth of 13 km, was monitored at 30.3 degrees north latitude and 103.0 degrees east longitude, which was strongly felt by residents in Sichuan's capital city of Chengdu located about 140 km from Ya'an.
Moreover, several aftershocks shook the area after the 7.0-magnitude quake. The most devastating among them measured 5.1, which jolted the bordering area of Lushan and Baoxing counties of Sichuan, at 8.07 a.m.
