South African all rounder Jacques Kallis requires just 184 runs to move above retired Indian batsman Rahul Dravid into the third place for most runs in a Test career. And if he amasses 274 runs he would also have leapfrogged Australia's Ricky Ponting and would be placed at the second position in the list.
South Africans are going to play two more Test matches (first has already been played) against Pakistan. Second Test match will start on Thursday at Newlands.
At present, Kallis has 13,105 runs from 161 Test matches (at an average 56.48) while Dravid with 13,288 runs in 164 Tests (at an average of 52.31) is very near to his grab.
Ricky Ponting has 13,378 in 168 Test matches (at an average of 51.85).
Kallis is also 12 wickets short of another landmark of 300 wickets in Test matches. If he achieves that he will be the first cricketer to have 10,000 + runs and 300 wickets.
However, Sachin Tendulkar, who is the top run scorer in Test matches is over 2 000 runs clear of anybody at the top of the list. Sachin has amassed 15,645 runs in 194 Tests at an average of 54.32. And with his inclusion in the test squad for the upcoming test series against Australia this distance is likely to increase further.
Tendulkar turns 40 in April, while Kallis is 37-year-old so there is a slight chance that he overcome Sachin if he manages to prolong his own career to a significant extent.
