About 400 people took to the streets in the Little India district of Singapore after a private bus knocked down a 33-year-old Indian national.
Singapore Police have arrested 27 people so far and violence has been brought under control. Around 16 people have been hurt, most of them police officers.
Protests started at about 9:23 pm local time as the angry protesters hurled railings at police and torching police cars and an ambulance. Around 300 police officers were deployed to control the situation and the situation was brought under control at around 11 pm local time.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said that whatever events may have sparked the rioting, there is no excuse for such violent, destructive, and criminal behavior.
Police commissioner Ng Joo Hee also condemned the riots as intolerable and wanton violence, said it was the first rioting in Singapore in more than 30 years.
Rioting in Singapore is punishable by up to seven years in prison plus caning.
Little India is an area popular among Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Nepali national.
