Pakistan government has announced a formal high treason proceeding against the former President Pervez Musharraf and will approach Supreme Court to form a judicial commission.
Interior Minister, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan announced on Sunday that Musharraf would be tried for high treason for subverting the constitution twice.
Musharraf sacked the elected government of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1999 and also suspended the constitution when he declared emergency in 2007.
In a press conference Khan said, "The government will approach the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday and will request the Chief Justice to constitute a three- member judicial commission for the high treason trial".
He said that an inquiry report prepared by a team of the Federal Investigation Agency will be presented in the apex court. The team had questioned Musharraf as to why he had dismissed the elected government and in what circumstances had he imposed emergency.
Legal experts are of the view that if Musharraf is convicted of high treason, he could face a possible death sentence or life imprisonment.
The government's request for re-opening treason case against Musharraf comes just a week after he was released from house arrest on getting bail in other cases.
Musharraf is already facing charges over an army raid operation in 2007 to remove militants from the Red Mosque in Islamabad, killing more than 100, including a cleric.
He also faces charges of murder in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Baloch rebel tribal leader, Nawab Akbar Bugti.
Musharraf is currently on bail and is residing in a farmhouse in Islamabad.
