China might change its one-child policy in coming years

Beijing, Sat, 16 Nov 2013 NI Wire

Reports suggest that Chinese government is rethinking about its strict one-child policy as the strict controls were undermining economic growth.

China has one of the largest elderly populations and the one-child policy introduced decades ago is not helping. Most of the population is becoming dependent, which can affect China’s economy in coming years.

Chinese government is thinking to allow families to have two children.

The change in rules state that couple in which one parent is a single child will now be able to have a second child.

Professors, scholars and officials have shown concern about the policy and China is planning to change it for the past five years. They regard it as outdated and harmful to the economy.

One-child policy was introduced in China to control the over population in the late 1970s.

Currently, urban couples are permitted a second child if both parents do not have siblings and rural couples are allowed to have two children if their first-born is a girl and any couple found violating the policy, is required to pay hefty fine.
