Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, who is on his three-day official visit to Pakistan for holding high level bilateral ministerial and delegates level meeting with his counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar on Saturday, Friday met to Pak President Asif Ali Zardari and urged him to consider the mercy plea of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner on a death row in Pakistan.
The release of Sarabjit Singh has been the bone of contention for both nation and India is trying to solve this matter though holding talks.
Sarabjit, a resident of Indian Punjab's border belt of Bhikhiwind, is lodged in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat prison for the last over 22 years. His family, particularly his sister Dalbir Kaur, has been fighting for his release with a sustained campaign in India and Pakistan.
Dalbir Kaur had recently met Krishna in New Delhi to request him to use government channels to get Sarabjit released.
An official sources say that Pak President has assured Krishna to consider on this matter. He even asked his official to take note of it.
After that, the two leaders reportedly exchanged pleasantries and discussed issues of bilateral interest during their meeting that lasted for about 30 minutes.
Krishna had earlier in the day said that he had come to Pakistan with a message of goodwill from the government and people of India.
"I am very happy to visit Islamabad at the invitation of the Foreign Minister of Pakistan and my esteemed colleague Hina Rabbani Khar. I bring a message of goodwill from India for the people of Pakistan," Krishna said soon after his arrival.
Asserting that the leadership of India and Pakistan have mandated building of trust and confidence between our two countries, Krishna said, "We are committed to finding solutions of all issues that have beset our relationship through peaceful bilateral dialogue, while we look to the future where our two countries are able to live together in an atmosphere of friendliness and all-round cooperation, free from terror and violence."
"My endeavour during this visit will be to promote the objectives that I have just mentioned," he added.
This is Krishna's second Pakistan visit since 2010.
