World Suicide Prevention Day is marked on September 10 every year with an objective to promote commitment and action to prevent suicides across the globe. The day is hosted by The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), in association with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health since 2003.
Like every year, this year also a theme has been decided for the day which is "Suicide Prevention across the Globe: Strengthening Protective Factors and Instilling Hope"
On average, almost 3000 people commit suicide daily. For every person who completes a suicide, 20 or more may attempt to end their lives.
World Suicide Prevention Day particularly aims at the prevention of suicidal behaviour, provision of adequate treatment and follow-up care for people who attempted suicide. In addition to that, the body is responsible reporting of suicides in the media.
Suicide rate is increasing day by day at global level and is a major concern presently for premature death. Government need to take necessary steps and create relevant policies, strategy and prevention programme at national as well as local level to reduce the cases of suicide attempts.
