Manipuri boxing icon Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, who won the bronze medal in the London Olympics, will receive an honour from Arunachal Pradesh (AP) Government for enlightening the name of Northeastern region of India, AP govt announced.
The Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has announced to honour Mary Kom with a cash Prize of Rs.10 Lakh as a gesture of appreciation.
"I salute Kom and convey my congratulations on behalf of the whole Northeast. This clearly proves the visible and hidden sports talent of the region," Tuki, an avid sportspersons and known footballer, said, adding the move would encourage Indians, particularly the sportspersons of the NE region, to work hard to win laurels for the nation.
Tuki also announced that any sportsperson from the state taking part in Olympics would be honoured with Rs 25 lakh and Rs 1 crore in case they win medals.
Five-time world champion Mary kom scripted history in London by reaching semi final and winning bronze for India in the Women's Flyweight (51-kg) category.
