Hashim Amla is the first South African to score a triple century ever, leaving behind AB de Villiers 278 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in 2010.
With Amla's knock of 311 not out and superb contribution of South African legend Kallis on the other hand South Africa are on the verge of replacing England from the top seat of test cricket.
Amla together with Kallis made the highest partnership of 377 for third wicket during first Test at The Kia Oval.
At tea, Graeme Smith, captain of South Africa, declared the innings at 637-2 having a lead of 252. In reply England lost their top four at 102-4 needing a further 150 to avoid an innings defeat.
When the day ended Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara were at the crease and will try hard to avoid 1-0 down in a three-Test series, which will determine the best team in the world
Even the bowling of South Africa was superb with Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Imran Tahir all taking a wicket each.
Alastair Cook edged Philander ball, Steyn drew Jonathan Trott into playing at one that left him, Morkel uprooted Kevin Pietersen off stump while Andrew Strauss top-edged a sweep at Tahir.
Amla was at 183 during the start of the day. He then slowly brought up his second double century. He then passed 250 and his previous best 253 and registered the highest score by passing 278 when he advanced to 281 by a boundary off Tim Bresnan.
Meanwhile Kallis brought up his 43rd Test century from 227 balls. He is just behind Tendulkar.
On this occasion Hashim said, "I never set goals, so records were not on my mind, until I got to about 250. I just tried to keep the runs flowing, because we knew what sort of target we wanted. Kallis was a great help, he is such an experienced campaigner and he gave me a lot of support and encouragement".
"The innings played by Graeme was a landmark innings. We just hung in there and he set it all up. Batting at the other end with Graeme and Jakes is something special; you watch great ambassadors of South African cricket applying their trade. But the greatest joy for me is that I was able to help South Africa to a position where we can win the game," he added.
