Syria crisis:UN extends monitoring mission for 30 days

Geneva, Sat, 21 Jul 2012 NI Wire

Amid the recent situations in the country, Syria has got some relief as the United Nations Security Council has voted unanimously to extend its observer mission in Syria. However the extension is just for only 30 days.

According to sources the members of UN have agreed that the mission could be extended further if the use of heavy weapons ends and fighting eases.

It is noted that the observers sent to oversee a ceasefire that never took hold, which have suspended their work in the wake of escalating violence.

The UN vote came after hours of intense negotiations among Security Council members.

Members have, however, agreed the mission could be extended further if the use of heavy weapons ends and fighting eases.

The mandate could be renewed only if Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council are able to confirm that both sides are abiding by the terms of the UN-backed ceasefire plan.

According to the report, Russia had threatened to veto the UK-drafted resolution, but Moscow's ambassador Vitaly Churkin finally backed a revised text.
