Dubai Soccer club Al Wasl sacked its coach Diego Maradona after the meeting of their board of director on Tuesday.
He was fired after a season in which Al Wasl finished 8th in a 12-team league. His team did not qualify for next season's Asian Champions League, lost in the quarterfinals of the UAE President's Cup and the final of the Gulf Clubs Champions League.
Club released statement, which read, "Following a meeting held by the board of directors of Al Wasl Football Company held today to evaluate the technical staff of Al Wasl Football Team. it was decided to terminate the services of coach Diego Maradona and his technical staff".
Diego still had one year left on his contract and was dismissed only after 14 months in charge.
There were many expectations from him when he arrived in Dubai on a two-year deal in May 2011. But under Maradona, club won only 7 out of 22 league games.
Before joining Al Wasl in May 2011, he was national coach of Argentina from where he was fired as well. 51-year-old, coached Argentina at the 2010 World Cup. He also coached first-division clubs of Argentina: Deportivo Mandiyu in 1994 and Racing Club in 1995.
Al-Wasl has won the UAE league title seven times, but not since 2007.
