Finally Roger Federer marked a defeat over French Julien by 4-6, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2, 7-6 (8/6), 6-1.
He will now face unseeded Belgian Xavier Malisse on Monday to book a place in the quarterfinals.
It could have been his worst Wimbledon defeat in 10 years as Federer has made it to fourth round of every Grand Slam since the 2004 French Open.
Roger won his last Grand Slam title in 2010 Australian Open, which also was a record 16 Grand Slam title win for him.
Benneteau (30) has never won an ATP Tour event but has defeated Federer in their previous encounter in Paris in 2009.
