Mohamed Morsi elected as Egypt's new President

The Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi was declared as the new president of Egypt on Sunday after the Egypt's presidential election run-off.

He defeated the opposition leader and ex-prime minister of Egypt Ahmed Shafiq, Xinhua by getting a record 51.73 percent of the vote quoted the Higher Presidential Election Commission as saying.

The first round of presidential election was conducted on May 23-24, with 12 candidates contesting the electing but none of them succeeded to won over 50 percent of the votes.

Morsi and Shafiq, who were the top two contenders for the president run, were then involved in a run-off round June 16.

President Morsi will join the office without a new constitution and parliament.

Earlier, in February 2011 the Supreme Council, which took over power in Egypt, has confirmed it will hand over power to the new president before by June-end.
