Attack of government forces have left at least 88 people killed including many children and women Homs (a province in Syria). Syria is under an internal conflict from 2011 and government forces are trying to suppress the uprising against them.
Activists claiming it to be a massacre has said many families were slaughtered by army. They have shelled and attacked many towns, an opposition activist claims saying several were butchered by government military. Local Coordination Committees (LCC) claimed that at least 88 people had died in today's attack, most of them are women and children.
In another province Houla, people were killed in shelling or summary executions.
Syrian Army is attacking towns of Syria to suppress the uprising using tanks, mortars and heavy machine guns. This has been criticized world over. Homs is said to be the hardest hit province since the uprising. UN estimated death of at least 9,000 people in the past 15 months.
An international envoy of 250 UN observers led by Kofi Annan has already been deployed in Syria to peacefully find a solution.
The unrest is because Ba'ath Party has been in power in Syria from 1970 when the then Defense Minister Hafez al-Assad seized the power and became President and was followed by his son Bashar al-Assad. In what is said as Arab spring, which saw many countries like Libya, Egypt, Yemen and Tunisia going under a successful uprising, Syria is going through the same but with unfortunate results thus far.
