Though Chennai Super Kings were favorites to win before the match started but players of Kings XI Punjab rose to the occasion and kept their hope alive for the playoffs. With this loss, Chennai completely depends on other IPL teams.
Punjab won the toss and Gilchrist put Chennai on batting first and his bowlers proved this decision right. With superb swing available all the Punjab bowlers became a lethal weapon. Praveen, Azhar and Awana took two wickets each and never gave Chennai batsmen a chance to score. Bravo fought hard for his 48 runs and somehow took his team to a score of 120, which was just not enough.
Returning from a hamstring injury, Gilchrist dominated the show and decided to win it for his team. He made 64 runs in 46 balls hitting 9 fours and 2 sixes. He remained unbeaten and took Punjab to 123 in just 16.3 overs. Chennai bowlers Morkel, Bravo and Hilfenhaus tried hard but the score was not much and Gilchrist was in no mood to let off.
Gilchrist was awarded man of the match for his innings. With this win Kings XI Punjab have 16 points and still have one match to play. So if they win their next match they have fare chances to make it to playoffs. Chennai have 17 points in their 16 matches and are on complete mercy of other teams so that they can make into playoffs.
