Defence Minister A.K.Antony today met DMK chief and former Tamilnadu chief minister Karunanidhi in regards of a consensus for the candidate for the forthcoming presidential election. Although Antony did not share details about his meetings yet said that he has discussed the latest political situation and would report to congress president Sonia Gandhi.
After the meeting, Antony said that he was here to discuss the political situation with the Karunanidhi. It was a discussion in detailed on the ongoing political situation and he will give details to the Sonia Gandhi.
Sources said that DMK leader TR Balu, Karunanidhi's daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, her mother Rajathimal and TKS Elangovan were present during the meeting.
It is noted that the DMK has eighteen Lok Sabha MPs, seven Rajya Sabha MPs and 23 MLAs.
It is speculation that party is trying to reach a common candidate with its alliance for the coming presidential election. The Congress had earlier held talks with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar. The Congress is reportedly backing the candidature of Vice President Hamid Ansari.
Meanwhile the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to put up its own candidate for the election, and may reportedly supporting nuclear scientist APJ Abdul Kalam, who had earlier served as the 11th President of India from July 25, 2002 to July 24, 2007.
Recently, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Shahid Siddiqui Samajwadi Party (SP) said his party would definitely back Dr. Kalam if there is a consensus on his name.
