All about Thyroid Cancer

In the recent times thyroid diseases have become a great public health concern. But still now thyroid cancer has not become that much common as other thyroid diseases, but as all the recent data indicates, thyroid cancer is on the rise and slowly is on its way to become one of the major types of cancer. Let us discuss regarding this lethal disease from clinical as well as other aspects.

What is Thyroid and what is its function?

Thyroid and parathyroid are two glands situated in the neck just below the portion called as Adam's apple. It is one of the most important functional organs which provides the necessary thyroid hormones relevant for stimulating other hormones which directly takes part into the metabolic process of the body. With the absence of this stimulation from thyroid hormones no other metabolic hormones can function.

What is Thyroid cancer

Tumors or nodules can be grown in any part of the thyroid glands and in most of the cases these nodules or tumors are benign or non malignant in character, that means, they cannot spread to other portions of the gland or body and hence they are non cancerous. Only the tumors which are malignant in character cause thyroid cancer.

Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer

Every time that a thyroid cancer is detected, it cannot be without any visible external syndromes but as the cancer grows in subsequent stages visible symptoms may be seen. Some of the common visible symptoms of thyroid cancer include difficulty or pain near the thyroid gland in talking, pain in swallowing food, breathing difficulty, pain in the throat, a nodule or lump near the thyroid glands etc.

Causes of Thyroid Cancer

Though it is still not clear to the scientific community of the world regarding the exact causes of thyroid cancer, in the recent years there have been a lot of scientific research and findings in relation to that. The latest research indicates to the change in the genetic change in the thyroid cells as the supposed cause of thyroid cancer.

Types of Thyroid Cancer

There are in total 5 types of thyroid cancer. A brief description to these types of thyroid cancer are provided below:

Papillary Thyroid Cancer: It is the most common type of thyroid cancer which encompasses 80% of all thyroid cancer cases. In this cancer the tumor of solid and irregular mass comes out of the tissues of thyroid gland. This type of thyroid cancer has a higher survival rate than others.

Follicular Thyroid Cancer: This is second most common type of thyroid cancer and on an average encompasses 15% of all thyroid cancer victims. This is more malignant in nature than papillary thyroid cancer and mainly occurs in elderly population.

Medullary Thyroid Cancer: This type of thyroid cancer originates in the C cells of the thyroid gland which actually do not produce the hormones required for body's metabolism.

Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer: It is the type of thyroid cancer which covers only 1% of thyroid cancer victims. This cancer may occur after several years of contacting radiation and may occur within goiter.

Thyroid lymphoma: It is the rarest type of thyroid cancer which begins in the immune system cells of the thyroid glands.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Thyroid Cancer

Many recent studies have indicated that Ayurvedic treatment can do wonder in treating the thyroid cancer patients. As the result of various surveys and clinical result shown, with Ayurvedic treatment a vast majority of the treated patients who were at their fist stage of the cancer, either became recovered or came into a much improved condition. Apart from various Ayurvedic compositions, there are host of Ayurvedic treatments which have been proved very beneficial in the post recovery stage of the thyroid patients.

Though thyroid cancer is still not considered to be a major type of cancer, with continuous increase in thyroid disorders it can soon be a nightmare for the public health and this is the reason why we need to be more cautious about it.
