Khaled Meshaal political leader of Hamas changed history when he took the first steps on to the Palestinian land for the first time in 45 years.
The first thing Meshaal did, was he kissed the soil of Gaza. "This is my third birth," Meshaal said. His visit is considered as a great step towards the peace.
Meshaal is accompanied by his deputy, Mussa Abu Marzuk and other senior officials during his visit.
"I hope God will make me a martyr on the land of Palestine in Gaza," he said before driving off.
He will spend 2 days in the Palestinian enclave and is expected to attend a rally on Saturday, advertised as both a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Hamas' founding and a celebration of "victory" over Israel in the recent days of fighting that resulted in a ceasefire.
Hamas has ruled Gaza since 2007.
56-year-old Meshaal went into exile after the 1967 Middle East war, when Israel took control of the territory along with East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
He has since then never set foot in Gaza, home to some 1.7 million Palestinians.
Meshaal ran Hamas from exile in Damascus from 2004 until January this year when he quit the Syrian capital because of Iranian-backed President Bashar al-Assad's war against Sunni Muslim rebels.
