International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Tuesday suspended the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) because of political and governmental interference in its election process.
This decision was taken at the IOC executive board committee meeting on the eve of the IOA elections.
About a month ago, the IOC executive board had warned the IOA to hold elections in a free and fare manner independently, and without government interference.
IOA was asked to amend its constitution and incorporate the principles of good governance, and be in sync with the Olympic Charter (fundamental principals or rules adopted by IOC).
However, the officials at IOA at first questioned IOC back as to who they are to tell them how to conduct elections. Now after suspension all the officials have started the blame game holding each other responsible for it.
Jitendra Singh, Union Sports Minister said, "Its very unfortunate for sports, I think it is embarrassing for sportspersons."
"We have already written to them, but they didn't reply. Let me get the details, and then, I will get back to you," he added.
The suspension of IOA means:
Now, the Olympic Council of Asia and the Commonwealth Games Federation are also expected to follow suit, which can result in similar sanctions from Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
Besides India, IOC has suspended countries like Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan for varying periods in the past.
