Former England Captain and Channel 9 commentator Tony Greig died after suffering from heart attack. He was diagnosed with lung cancer 2 months ago.
He was 66-years-old. He was rushed into St Vincent's hospital, Sydney from his home early morning where he died at about 13:45 local time on Saturday.
Greig had been candid about the disease. "It's not good. The truth is I've got lung cancer. Now it's a case of what they can do," Greig had said.
His sudden demise has led to sorrow and sadness in the cricket fraternity. Cricketers and fellow commentators took to Twitter to express their sorrow.
Pakistan Cricket Coach, Dav Whatmore tweeted, "Just landed in chennai and learnt of Tony Greig's passing. Deepest sympathies to his family. Great man, great career. He will be missed".
Former sports broadcaster, Glenn Mitchell tweeted, "Vale Tong Greig, dead at 66 to lung cancer - way too young. His contributions to the sport of cricket will be missed worldwide. Tony Greig's contribution to the formation of World Series Cricket and what it did for the sport and the players should never be forgotten".
Former Australian Bowler Glenn McGrath tweeted, My thoughts are with Tony Greig's family today. RIP Tony Greig :(
ESPN Cricinfo tweeted, "They're dancing in the aisles in Sharjah!" Those words will never be repeated with the same passion".
Tony was considered as a complete cricketer of his time and also was a superb commentator.
He played 58 Tests for England from 1972-1977 scoring more than 3,500 runs and taking 141 wickets.
Tony was also remained captain of England Test side for 14 matches.
Greig was named one of Wisden Players of the Year in the year 1975.
