Gunman who killed 27 people in US school dead

New Delhi, Sat, 15 Dec 2012 NI Wire

A gunman opened fire in an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, US today, killing at least 27 people, including 18 children.

The shooting took place at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. The shooting began about 9.30 a.m.

The suspect is named Adam Lanza and he is in his 20s.

Suspected gunman was found dead and his body is in a classroom after the shooting incident.

Police recovered two weapons from the suspect, a Glock and a Sig Sauer. It's unclear if police killed the suspect.

One parent said the shooting took place during an administrators meeting.

President Barack Obama was informed about the shooting and will receive regular updates throughout the day, the White House said.

Newtown officials told parents to stay by their phone and not to go to the school. But frantic parents converged at a fire station near the school after reports of the shooting.

Following the firing, school children were evacuated to the firehouse and all schools in town were locked down.

The shooting appeared to be the nation's second-deadliest school shooting, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, in which 32 people, including two Indians, were killed and 17 others wounded.
