Mali's Prime Minister Sheikh Modibo Diarra was arrested at his home late Monday night by the Kati military barracks. The orders for the arrest are thought to be given by coup leader Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo.
60-year-old then resigned on state television. Military accused him of blocking efforts to stabilize a nation.
In April military officially handed power back to civilians and Diarra was appointed Prime Minister.
However, for several weeks tension has been mounting again between soldiers and Diarra.
Diarra is a noted astrophysicist who has worked on several NASA space programs and has also served as Microsoft's chairperson for Africa.
Mali has been divided by a coup in the capital and hardline Islamist in the north.
