Messiah has broken Torpedo's 40-year-old record. Lionel Messi broke yet another record when he scored twice at the Benito Villamarín against Betis on Sunday.
Gerd Mueller set a record when he scored 85 goals for club and country in a calendar year. He scored 72 goals for Bayern and 13 for Germany in 1972. He was 27 when he set it.
Barcelona forward Messi leveled the record when he scored first goal in the 16th minute. He picked up the ball in a central position and scored with an angled goal in the bottom right corner.
10 minutes later 25-year-old surpassed the phenomenal 40-year-old mark. Messi has now scored 74 goals for Barcelona and 12 goals for Argentina in 2012.
In an interview after the match Messi said, "the record is great for what it means, but the most important thing is that the team won and that we maintained the distance with the teams behind us."
" When the year starts my goals are to win all titles with the team, which is more important, personal records are secondary," he added.
Messi is one of the 3 players chosen for the World Player of the Year 2012. He has been winning for the three consecutive times and he is favourite to win it this year as well.
But Messi says, he will be happy if Andre Iniesta wins it.
"If Iniesta wins it, it will be totally deserved and it would make me very happy. It's a title for the whole team."
Winner of World Player award will be announced next month.
