Roger Federer defeated Spain's David Ferrer by 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at the O2 Arena in London, on Thursday.
Roger Federer said, "Ferrer showed why he's so tough to beat. He makes you hit the extra shot; he makes it physical. You know that mentally he's not going to go anywhere."
Roger won the opening set in 49 minutes but had to fight hard to win the second set.
"I tried hard to not make it happen today," Federer said. "You could feel that he's confident, he's on a run. I think even more it's a great victory for me."
It is 14th victory of 17-time Grand Slam champion Federer over Ferrer. In 10 years of facing each other Ferrer has won only three sets against him.
He has qualified for the semi-finals of the World Tour Finals with this win. Roger will now face Juan Martin del Potro in his last group match on Saturday.
Del Potro defeated Janko Tipsarevic by 6-0, 6-4 in the other Group B match.
