Andhra Pradesh High Court has said that the life ban imposed on former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is illegal and unsustainable by law.
Responding to a plea filed by lawyers of Azharuddin a division bench on Thursday set aside the order of a lower court, which had upheld the ban.
Ban from playing cricket for life on Azharuddin and few other Indian cricketers were imposed by BCCI 12 years ago on Dec 5, 2000. They were found guilty of match fixing.
49-year-old Azharuddin challenged BCCI's decision in the City Civil Court, which upheld the ban. He then moved to high court arguing that the BCCI imposed the ban without any evidence.
In his 15-year career he played 99 Tests scoring 6,215 runs and 334 ODIs scoring 9,378 runs. Azhar has been one of India's most successful captains.
