Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed Anatoly Serdyukov from the post of Defense Minister and has appointed former Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu as the new Defense minister as his replacement.
Putin said, "Taking into consideration the situation that has emerged regarding the Defence Ministry, in order to create the requisite conditions for an objective investigation of all the issues, I made the decision to relieve Defense Minister Serdyukov of his duties".
This decision has been taken after Serdyukov's name was linked in alleged real estate scams involving nearly $100 million run by subcontractor Oboronservis.
Sergei Shoigu bears the rank of Army General. He was the head of Russia's Emergency Ministry from 1994 to 2012.
In May 2012 he was appointed as the Governor of Moscow region.
Dmitry Peskov said, "Putin named Shoigu at recommendation of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev".
