Sri Lanka ODI and Test captain Mahela Jayawardene has said the new ODI rule by the International Cricket Council on field restrictions is in favor of batsmen and not of bowlers.
According to new rule instead of three, there will be 2 Powerplays: the first 10 overs with only two fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle and the second five-over batting Powerplay will have to be taken before 40th over and only 3 fielders will be allowed outside the circle.
But even in the non-Powerplay overs only four fielders will be allowed outside the circle.
Jayawardene said, "Restricting the number of outfielders to four, even outside of powerplay overs, heavily favors batsmen".
"I am not comfortable with these changes. It's not the way to go forward. I have this funny feeling that spinners will not have a role to play in the future," he added.
Besides these new rules there is the use of new balls at either end and of a free hit after a bowler bowls a no-ball.
Jaywardene says all these rules in limited-overs cricket are favoring batsmen, which should not be the case.
These new rules for Tests, ODIs and T20 came into effect in the ongoing series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
