Just after Sri Lanka lost the T20 World Cup 2012 final against West Indies in Colombo, Mahela Jayawardene step down as their Twenty20 captain.
Jayawardene said, "I had a chat to the selectors before this tournament started. I was going to step down from T20 captaincy after this World Cup. I personally feel that for Sri Lanka going forward we need a younger leader. It's a great opportunity for somebody to start in that T20 format. I've spoken to the selectors and they were quite happy with that choice."
Jayawardene will still remain ODI and Test team captain and will also be available for Twenty20 selection.
Since winning the ODI World Cup in 1996, Sri Lanka has now gone to four World Cup Finals, 2 ODIs (2007 and 2011) and 2 T20s (2009 and 2012) but has not won any one of them.
Yesterday match against West Indies was the same. They easily restricted the Gayle storm and the whole team to mere 138, which was achievable. They had home advantage, 35,000 fans supporting them and still they lost. Only 3 batsmen could reach double figure, none of them stayed on the crease and were all bowled out to 101.
There is nothing wrong with the team, there never was, but still they lost. They had lost to a team they defeated twice in this World cup by 9 wickets. It is not easy to determine why?
"It hurts a lot. It hurts because you want to do something special. Not just personally as individuals but for the public as well. We've been playing some good cricket but we haven't been able to cross that hurdle. As a cricketer, it hurts a lot. We need to move on and try and see how well we can get over this and get back on and keep fighting again", Jayawardene added.
They are not chokers, definitely they are not, but they couldn't perform at the nick of the time, at the last gate.
