It took 33 long years, a Chris Gayle and combined effort of whole team to bring back the cup they won the very first time. West Indies has won T20 World Cup 2012 by defeating Sri Lanka at their home.
None of the present West Indian teammates were born when West Indies last won the ODI World Cup in 1979. Very few would have thought that West Indies would even make it to semifinal when this year world cup started. But it was the courage, the determination, the hard work, the Gangnam style, the joy and mostly the combined effort of a team that brought back the glory days.
For the past few years West Indies cricket has went through a lot, there were constant conflicts between the teammates and board, there was money issue, contract issue and more. This victory has come as a relief and an answer to all those who believed Golden days of West Indian cricket has ended.
In the T20 World Cup 2012 final, West Indies won the toss and decided to bat first. Though Chris Gayle went on just 3 runs, it was day of Marlon Samuels who made 78 runs in 56 balls hitting 6 sixes and 3 fours. Their team crumbled and could only give a target of mere 137. Mendis from Sri Lanka took 4 wickets.
It looked Sri Lanka had won half the battle, but none of the batsmen could stand and score. Only three batsmen could touch the double figures. At the end they were all out for just 101 runs. Narine took 3 and Sammy took 2 wickets.
Marlon Samuels was awarded the man of the match award. Shane Watson of Australia was given the man of the series.
