Simon Taufel, one of the best Cricket umpires of young generation has finally decided to retire from international umpiring. His last International match as an umpire was the T20 World Cup final of West Indies against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium.
He announced his retirement in an interview held after World Twenty20 final. In the interview he said, "When I look back, there are many memorable moments but I can instantly remember the India versus Pakistan game at Mohali during the 2011 World Cup semi-final as the most exciting one".
"The Prime Ministers of the two countries were present and it was more than just a game of cricket. I believe there were two finals in 2011 World Cup. The semi-final and the final," he added.
41-year-old Simon will now be the Umpire Performance and Training Manager with the ICC.
Bruce Oxenford in the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires from November 1 will replace him.
Taufel, an Australian umpire, umpired in 74 Tests and 174 ODIs in his 12 year long career. He started his career at the age of 27 in One- Day Internationals and 29 in Tests.
He made his ODI debut in Australia versus Sri Lanka match played at Sydney in the Jan 1999. He made his test debut as an umpire in Australia versus West Indies match played at Melbourne in the Dec 2000.
His quality can be judged by the fact that he has won the ICC Umpire of the Year award for five successive years from 2004 to 2008.
