Robert A. Iger, Chairman and CEO of Walt Disney Company and George Lucas, Chairman and Founder of Lucasfilm signed an agreement for The Walt Disney Company to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. on Tuesday, in Burbank, California.
The franchise will be brought for $4.05 billion.
Walt Disney Co will also produce at least 3 new films in the Star Wars series and the first film will release in 2015. Lucas will remain a creative consultant on the new films
Iger said, "Disney plans to release three more films in the Star Wars sci-fi saga that ranks among the biggest movie franchises of all time".
The last Star Wars picture was Revenge of the Sith, which came in the year 2005.
Lucas said: "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers."
Over the years Disney has brought many franchise, companies and others. In 2006, Disney acquired Pixar, and in 2009 it bought Marvel.
