With the successful hosting of Formula One Grand Prix last year followed by the second edition this year at the Buddh International Circuit (Noida), one can now hope to see India in the world-sporting map. At least motor sport that was totally alien to India has changed the scenario; finally the elite sport has successfully made its mark in India.
However, as many might suspect on the long-term success of motor sports in India, owing to infrastructure development and most importantly the lowest fan base, there is certainly a chance that it might grow gradually with critical mass support, provided it gets support from sport- entrepreneurs.
Cricket is more popular in India than any other sport as it doesn't need much investment from a player barring some of the most basic equipments. Again there is no one in India whom we can identify as a successful F1 driver. Certainly, Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok are the lone Indian F1 drivers but it’s hard to see another Indian F1 driver anytime soon.
Nevertheless, to take this sport to the next level there is need of a lot more corporate participation as this sport is something that needs much investment in building infrastructure and grooming young Indian motor sport enthusiasts. Partly, the success can be seen as the result of the top most private groups, including the Jaypee Group who have worked with much efficiency.
Indians are considered the most car-crazy and car-knowledgeable people on earth. Hence, it's no doubt Indians love motor sports. Interestingly, the World Superbike Championship is also going to make its debut in India and there is possibility that the GT1 series will take place in India as well. There is more on the card; it's very likely that India is likely to be the host in one of the races in the inaugural season in 2014. Known as Formula E series, this is designed exclusively for electric cars.
As per motor sport's governing body, Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), this will be a revelation in the world of motor sports. Motor sport is certainly focusing on emerging markets. Nevertheless, the power and might of Indian market is very well accepted worldwide. It's up to some India's big corporate houses to take interest in such sports in order to explore the market and establish the sports further.
