The much awaited Indo-German Urban Mela, Delhi kick started Saturday on Oct 27 at the Indraprastha Millennium" Park. The show was inaugurated by former Miss Universe and Bollywood actress, Sushmita Sen along with the German Ambassador to India, Michael Steiner and Governor of Delhi and Tejinder Khanna in a grand opening ceremony at the picturesque of Indrparastha Park.
The show is showcasing 16 multi-purpose pavilions called the "gemstones" representing a blend of technology, science, culture and entertainment and is open from October 27 to 4th November 2012 from 10.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.
"Germany is celebrating a series of cultural and scientific events under the project, "Germany and India 2011 – 2012: Infinite Opportunities" proving that there are infinite opportunities to be explored between both the countries and Indo - German Urban Mela the major highlight of this project will go a long way in strengthening the bonds and paving new ways", said Michael Steiner, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to India while addressing the opening ceremony.
Lt. Governor Tejinder Khanna expressed his happiness for being a part of the show and said "There really is a need for a sustainable future and it is a matter of extreme delight for us that starting today, for the next nine days, Germany will present its uniqueness, science, technology, education and culture to Delhi."
"I feel proud to be witnessing such an extraordinary event between the two nations. In the past we could have never imagined the showcase of such brilliant concepts by another country in India but with this kind of an initiative Germany has truly strengthened its ties with us. Germany was the first country in the world to excel the field of research and innovation and I am glad they are bringing us closer to their expertise. The designs of these pavilions are proof of such brilliance in architecture. I salute Markus Heinsdorff for weaving in his Indian inspiration while designing these spectacular gemstones, Bravo!," said Sushmita Sen, the heartthrob of millions of heart, who looked stunning as ever.
Later in the opening feast, Delhi audio-visual collective B.L.O.T! and Berlin based electronic act Jahcoozi together rocked the stage and made the visitors feel the absolute delight.
Great scientific minds of the country also presented their topics at the Indo-German Grand Science Slam during the day. Following lectures by renowned Indian and German professors, six finalists presented their research in a simple, fun and creative format.
During the coming nine days of the show, visitors can explore Bosch’s safety systems that can help avoid road accidents, share your vision of the future with Deutsche Bank’s Dreamand enjoy cultural programmes with concerts, creative workshops, dance and theatre performances, and much more. The Beergarden will provide a delicious selection of traditional German and Indian cuisine.
In addition to that, there will also be guided tours by the installation artist Markus Heinsdorff and many other interactive games, presentations, workshops, conferences on music, art and education including programmes exclusively for children. After New Delhi, the Indo-German Urban Mela will travel to the finale of the tour in Pune.
The year of Germany in India is initiated by the German Federal Foreign Office, the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Goethe-Institute.
