A former top commander of banned rebel group 'Liberation of Tamil Tigers Eelem' (LTTE) who is in the Interpol's wanted group, Wednesday has been released by Sri Lankan military authorities quoting that he was free to continue with his work for charity, media reports say.
According to reports, the Sri Lankan military authorities Wednesday informed to media that Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP, who is the last leader of the Tamil Tigers would not face criminal charges viewing his social work.
KP, 58 is in the list of Interpol which was instigated by India charging him to help the suicide bombers in killing Rajiv Gandhi on 20th May 1991.
The news of his release came when the head of the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry's media centre Lakshman Hulugalle said to the reporters.
"Practically, there is no detention now. He is running a non-government organisation and doing work for the benefit of the people... And he is free to do his work. There is no court case against him," Hulugalle told reporters in Colombo.
He added, "He has every right to operate from that area more so because his NGO is going to get involved in the development of the area. It is a major victory for us that someone who had worked against us previously as a leader of the Tamils has now agreed to be a partner in development."
KP had grabbed the command of LTTE after the assassination of group founder Vellupillai Prabhakaran in May 2009.
