WASHINGTON - The English language version of Wikipedia will be blacked out intentionally on Wednesday for 24 hours to protest an anti-piracy bill being considered in Congress.
The message went up on the popular community-based online encyclopedia's website Monday night.
The legislation is designed to combat sales of pirated U.S. products overseas. But Wikipedia and a number of other influential websites said the bill has other provisions that threaten the freedom and security of the Internet.
Supporters of the bill include the film and music industry, which often sees its products sold illegally. They say the legislation is needed to protect intellectual property and jobs.
Critics say the legislation could hurt the technology industry and infringe on free-speech rights.
Wikipedia, considered one of the Internet's most popular websites with millions of visitors daily, is asking readers to contact members of Congress about the bill during the blackout.
