Tehran, Apr 29 (Xinhua-ANI): Iran has found a new natural gas field in the country's southwestern province of Khuzestan which is estimated to contain reserves as much as the South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Sunday.
Seyyed Mahmoud Mohaddes, the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) exploration director, told Mehr that new gas field has been found at one of the greatest oil fields in Khuzestan province.
Mohaddes said a 5000-meter well will be drilled in the field to find more information about the condition of the field and the amount of its natural gas reserves, according to Mehr.
The report has been independently confirmed by the Iranian Oil Ministry.
The South Pars/North Dome field is a natural gas condensate field located in the Persian Gulf. It is the world's largest gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the field holds an estimated 1, 800 trillion cubic feet (51 trillion cubic meters) of in-situ natural gas and some 50 billion barrels (7.9 billion cubic metres) of natural gas condensates.
This gas field covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, of which 3,700 square kilometers is in Iranian territorial waters called South Pars and 6,000 square kilometers is in Qatari territorial waters referred to as North Dome. (Xinhua-ANI)
