Dhaka, April 24 (IANS) Over 8,000 people have been sued in cases filed in connection with a clash in Bangladesh's Sylhet district during a countrywide strike Monday, a media report said Tuesday.
The clash took place between pro-strike picketers and law enforcers in Bishwanath sub-district, the Daily Star reported.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel and police conducted an overnight raid till early Tuesday in different parts of the district and arrested 40 people.
Dev Dulal, a sub-inspector at Bishwanath police station, filed a case Monday night against 5,000 people, including 100 activists of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on charges of attacking police during the strike.
Kamal Hossain, an official of Bishwanath sub-district, filed another case against 3,000 people.
A tense situation has been prevailing in the area following the clash. RAB, police and Border Guards Bangladesh personnel have been deployed to fend off any untoward incident.
