Washington, Apr 25 (ANI): A key US General has said American commanders have come to accept that Pakistani leaders are willing to take only limited steps toward halting the flow of drugs and bomb-making materials to Afghanistan.
Major General John Toolan, who was NATO's South-western Commander until last month, told The Nation that the movement of illicit items across the Afghan-Pakistan border is 'free flowing'.
On the Pakistani side, the Taliban have 'huge caches of IED-making materials', said Major General Toolan. They have been paying for those bomb parts, along with the rest of their operating expenses, by selling narcotics, such as Afghan opium used in heroin production, he added.
He added that US commanders realise Pakistani officials are worried about pressing the Taliban too hard, fearing the ramifications of major battles inside their own nation.
"Keeping diplomatic pressure on Pakistan is important, but breaking the government is not in our best interests," he said. (ANI)
